Duality

Description

Three wall-mounted reliefs in portrait orientation, each comprising two overlapping glass panels held in two aluminium brackets. On the centre of each panel are forty rows of English and Chinese words, handwritten by the artist, and printed in one of the three CMYK primary colours. Each row consists of five English words and five groups of four Chinese characters in an alternating order, stating the colour they are printed in. Each primary colour is paired with another to create a secondary colour amid the overlapping clusters of text.

The piece deconstructs the concept of colours into their visual and symbolic representation. The artist invites viewers to explore their understanding, memories, and emotions associated with each colour, and to appreciate colours in a new perspective that is personal to them.

Duality doubles as a conduit for the artist’s self-expression of his cultural identities. He used pairs of panels and primary colours to echo his two identities. The repetition of handwriting and the oscillating languages symbolise the restless struggle of his identities and ambivalence while growing up. Finally, the secondary colours depict a product of his Chinese and British identity.
